The Ultimate 12-Month Malay Wedding Planning Timeline & Checklist (Singapore)

Avoid the last-minute stress. Our comprehensive guide for planning a Malay wedding in Singapore, from booking your venue/Kadi to scheduling your bridal henna session.

The Ultimate 12-Month Malay Wedding Planning Timeline & Checklist (Singapore)

Planning a wedding in Singapore is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. For a traditional or modern Malay wedding, coordinating multiple vendors, family expectations, and religious requirements requires careful organization.

From booking your ROMM slot to finalizing your gubahan trays and scheduling your malam berinai (henna session), timing is everything.

Here is our ultimate 12-month guide to planning your Malay wedding in Singapore without the stress.

Phase 1: 12 to 9 Months Out – The Foundation

This phase is all about locking in the most competitive elements of your wedding. In Singapore, popular dates and venues book out up to a year in advance.

  • Establish Your Budget: Agree on the total budget and determine the breakdown between the bride’s and groom’s families.
  • Draft Your Guest List: The size of your guest list determines your venue choice. Malay weddings in Singapore typically range from 300 to 1,000+ guests.
  • Book the Venue: Whether it is a void deck, a community club, a lawn, or a hotel ballroom, lock in your date.
  • Hire Your Wedding Planner / Decorator: Secure the team who will design your pelamin (dais) and handle the layout.
  • Book Your Caterer: For Malay weddings, food (nasi minyak, rendang, lauk-pauk) is a central part of the experience. Ensure they are Halal-certified and offer food tasting.

Phase 2: 8 to 6 Months Out – Outfits & Visuals

This is when you define the look and feel of your wedding day.

  • Select Your Bridal House (Butik Pengantin): Choose your outfits for the Akad Nikah (usually white/traditional) and the Bersanding (reception). Pin down alterations.
  • Book Your Photographer & Videographer: High-quality visual storytellers book out fast. Review their portfolios for editing styles.
  • Choose Your Wedding Favors (Bunga Rampai / Berkat): Decide what gifts your guests will take home.

Phase 3: 5 to 3 Months Out – Administration & Core Details

Now, we handle the legalities and the remaining vendor bookings.

  • Register with ROMM: Submit your marriage application on the Registry of Muslim Marriages (ROMM) website. Select your Kadi (solemnizer) and confirm their availability.
  • Attend Marriage Preparation Course (Kursus Rumahtangga): This is highly recommended (and sometimes mandatory) for couples marrying in Singapore.
  • Book Your Makeup Artist (MUA) & Hair Stylist: Schedule a trial makeup session.
  • Book Your Bridal Henna Artist:
    • Why now? Professional henna artists mix their natural henna cones fresh and can only take a limited number of brides per weekend.
    • The Strategy: Secure your spot to avoid rush booking fees or having to settle for chemical-based, non-organic cones.
  • Plan the Gubahan (Hantaran Trays): Decide on the exchange gifts and buy the decorative trays.

Phase 4: 2 Months Out – Coordination & Invitations

  • Send Out Invitations: Distribute physical cards and digital e-invites.
  • Finalize the Program Timeline: Coordinate the entrance timing, the kompang/hadrah group, and the cake-cutting sequence.

Phase 5: The Final Week – The Crucial Countdowns

  • Day -3: Pack and Prep: Confirm all outfits are ironed and hantaran trays are complete.
  • Day -2: The Malam Berinai (Henna Session):
    • The Perfect Timing: Schedule Dini to apply your bridal henna exactly 48 hours before the Akad Nikah.
    • Why? Natural henna requires 24–48 hours of contact with oxygen to oxidize and darken into its peak rich, burgundy-brown photogenic shade. Applying it too late results in a light orange tone in your wedding photos.
  • Day -1: Rest and Hydrate: Avoid heavy work. Apply coconut oil to your henna stain to boost color intensity and keep your skin hydrated.
